La “Video-Game Therapy” consiste nell’ utilizzo dei videogiochi in contesti controllati per poter sviluppare e mantenere diverse componenti psicologiche, comprendere e analizzare le dinamiche psicologiche del giocatore e sviluppare comportamenti prosociali. Diversi studi trasversali e di formazione hanno dimostrato che i videogiochi possono migliorare le funzioni cognitive come l’attenzione visiva, il controllo cognitivo, la memoria visiva a breve termine, la velocità di elaborazione generale decisionale, etc. L’utilizzo dei videogiochi in contesti controllati, inoltre, può essere uno strumento per esplorare e approfondire l’emotività delle persone, per trattare di argomenti sociali e prosociali, per sviluppare e consolidare l’autostima, analizzare e confrontarsi con le proprie paure, e possono essere utilizzati per approfondire la conoscenza generale della persona che sta giocando. Bastano brevi sessioni di gioco continuato nel tempo per poter acquisire le diverse competenze cognitive o per indagare e conoscere i vari aspetti psicologici della persona. Infine, rispettando il PEGI (la scala europea che regolamenta il consiglio sull’età di utilizzo del videogioco), la Game Therapy è adatta a tutte le età: dall’età scolare all’età adulta. Queste competenze vengono sviluppate più velocemente in contesto ludico grazie al fattore divertimento, così come, tramite il gioco, possiamo esplorare ed elaborare diverse emozioni che tendenzialmente tendiamo a nascondere. Apprendere competenze e conoscenze tramite il gioco, inoltre, è già largamente utilizzato in svariati contesti, da quello scolastico a quello lavorativo, con risultati eccellenti.
